Ann Nutt Memorial

ABOUT ANN NUTT
Ann Nutt, was the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resource’s Director of Early Care and Education Quality Initiatives.
Early childhood professionals across West Virginia were greatly saddened by her death on October 16, 2006 at the age of 52.  In her obituary, her family wrote, “After a fearless and courageous battle against (breast) cancer, Ann was called home to oversee God’s children and will forever be missed by all the lives she touched.”

Ann was an active member of the Governing Board of the West Virginia Association for Young Children (WVAYC), the Apprenticeship for Child Development Specialist State Council (ACDS) and served as our state’s representative on the NAEYC Affiliate Council.  She was an ACDS Instructor of Instructors and assisted other states in establishing this training program, including the training of instructors in Alaska

In 2017, the Ann Nutt Memorial Bench and Certificate of Achievement was awarded to Polly Steele, Director of Bridgeport United Methodist Pre-School in Bridgeport Wv. Like Ann, Polly has worked with children for over 30 years. She has been the director of the Bridgeport United Methodist Pre-School for over 25 years. She is very active in the West Virginia Association for Young Children holding many offices on the Governing Board of Directors. Presently she is our chairwomen of the Week of the Young Child. Before Ann’s passing Polly attended many NAEYC and SECA Conferences with Ann. Polly Steele exemplifies how an Early Childhood Professional lives and leads. It was my honor to present the Ann Nutt Memorial Bench and Certificate of Achievement to Polly Steele.
THE ANN NUTT MEMORIAL BENCH
Each year we present a children’s bench in Ann’s memory. WVAYC Board of Directors select the recipient of the “Ann Nutt Memorial Bench” on the bases of their professionalism in early childhood in West Virginia.  It is our wish that the recipient of the “Ann Nutt Memorial Bench” be someone that had close ties to Ann professionally and shared her vision for early childhood in West Virginia.
